From Staff Reports

Inmates caught

Two minimum-security inmates who walked away from the Maryland Correctional Training Center near Hagerstown have been caught, according to the Maryland State Police.

Inmates Michael Allen Johnson, 24, of Sykesville, and Matthew L. Chait, 26, of Germantown, were found Tuesday night at Brown's Motel in Ellicott City, police said.

Authorities had been searching for the two since early Friday, police said. Both were outside the fence helping a private painting contractor when they walked away from the center.

The two were a part of the center's pre-release block, which houses minimum-security inmates, some of whom are in the work release program, police said.

They will be transferred to the Roxbury Correctional Institution in Hagerstown, authorities said.

Montgomery Village man identified as Damascus crash victim

DAMASCUS -- Montgomery County Police have identified the man who was killed Tuesday afternoon in a head-on collision in Damascus as Alfred Burnett Weedon, of Montgomery Village.

Weedon, 61, died at Suburban Hospital from injuries suffered in the crash on Woodfield Road, police said. The Jeep he was driving collided with a Ride On bus about 12:50 p.m. near the intersection of Pleasant View Lane, police said.

The bus driver, Roberto Pinedo, 64, of Gaithersburg, and a passenger, Conchita Larion, 74, of Germantown, were treated at area hospitals, police said. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The investigation is continuing. Detectives ask anyone who witnessed the crash to call 301-840-2435.

Doors at golf course damaged

Several doors were damaged at the Glade Valley Golf Course in Walkersville sometime after 8 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office.

A worker arrived about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday and found a fence at the entrance, doors to the maintenance area and chemical shed, and a door and frame to a building damaged, Cpl. Jennifer Bailey said. Nothing appears to have been stolen.

Beware of scams

The Frederick County Sheriff's Office reminds residents to be wary of unsolicited e-mails and telephone calls.

The agency has noticed several scams targeting residents this year, Cpl. Jennifer Bailey said. The most common involve the website Craig's List or callers posing as secret shoppers.

A fake company pretends to recruit people to secretly shop area businesses to rate their employees.

A company is fake if the caller asks you to pay a fee upfront, Bailey said. A legitimate company also would not send a large check, tell a person to keep a portion and then mail back the rest.

The Craig's List scam targets people posting items for sale, Bailey said. The scammer offers to buy the item and to send extra money, as long as some is sent back. When the seller cashes the check, it turns out to be fraudulent.

The sheriff's office reminds residents not to give out personal information such as credit card and Social Security numbers to anyone making unsolicited calls or e-mails.

MontCo police to train at stations

If you see flashing lights and a large police presence at Montgomery County Metro and MARC train stations, don't be alarmed.

It's only training exercises to be held from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and Friday.

This training is designed to duplicate the response that could be used to detect and prevent terrorist activity in the area, Montgomery County Police said.

No intelligence has been developed of terrorist threats to the county, police said. This is a planned exercise done on a regular basis.
