Another blue-sky day for the fair and another night of country music on the grandstand stage as Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, and the legendary Brenda Lee gave two solid performances Sunday night. The Gatlins went on first and opened their show with "America the Beautiful," which showcased the harmony the brothers are known for. Larry is the oldest brother and is lead vocalist. That was followed up with the Gatlin classic Texas swing "Houston" and "I Just Wish You Were Someone I Love." Their set also included what Larry said was his favorite song he's written to date, "I've Done Enough Crying Today." It's on the Gatlins new CD, "Pilgrimage," as is the current single "Johnny Cash is Dead and His House Burned Down." Larry and Cash were good friends and the song is a tribute to Cash. The message is that country music will never be the same because Cash and other classic artists are gone. "I've enjoyed him for years," said Dave Meador of Walkersville said of Larry Gatlin. "He has a unique voice." Wearing a black pantsuit with a sequined jacket, "Little Miss Dynamite" Brenda Lee took the stage after the Gatlin's show. That brought Nancy Brubaker, a Community Living resident, to her feet in the second row. A long-time fan of Lee's, Brubaker has collected everything "Brenda Lee" for the past 30 years. Her favorite is "I'm Sorry," one of Lee's signature songs. Brubaker was thrilled when Lee said hello to her from the stage. Lee performed a medley of country classics, some songs she didn't record but wishes she had, and some of the songs that made her a hit on the rock and country charts. She took a short music break to share some anecdotes with the audience and closed the show with one of her most popular hits, "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree."
