A large equipment barn on Cook Brothers Road caught fire Friday afternoon. Firefighters from Frederick, Montgomery and Howard counties battled the blaze.
IJAMSVILLE -- Fire destroyed a barn housing farm machinery and oil drums on a dairy farm Friday in the 10800 block of Cook Brothers Road, causing a black plume of smoke that could be seen miles away in Frederick .

No one was injured in the blaze, which began around 2 p.m., said Capt. Greg Lawson of the New Market Volunteer Fire Co.

The barn housed several pieces of farm machinery and between 20 and 50 oil drums. Several of the oil drums exploded as the fire spread.

Between 50 and 75 firefighters from Frederick , Montgomery and Howard counties fought the blaze. Ten tankers carried water to the fire because of the limited water supply in the area. Hoses stretched for at least a mile by rows of corn and a pen of cows.

Firefighters had to stay outside the structure while attacking the fire, Lawson said. It took them about half an hour to control the blaze.

A county fire marshal was called to the scene to find out what caused the blaze.

Lawson did not have an dollar estimate for the damage.

The 70- by 40-foot barn was located about 12 feet from the main residence, but firefighters prevented flames from spreading to the house.

"They saved it," Lawson said. "They did a good job."
