Man arrested in stabbing

A man faces attempted second-degree murder and assault charges after stabbing a man he knew early Friday, the Frederick Police Department reported.

Frederick City Department of Public Works workers reported an assault about 12:30 a.m. near Fifth and East streets, police said.

When officers arrived, they saw a man lying on the ground and another sitting next to him, both covered in blood, police said.

One man said the other, who police identified as Richard P. Michael, 67, of no fixed address, stabbed him several times, police said.

Several witnesses confirmed the claim, officers said.

The man who had been stabbed was taken to the trauma unit at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, where police said he was in serious condition.

Michael was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital for chest pains and minor injuries, police said.

Gun drawn at school bus stop leads to arrest

KNOXVILLE -- A man faces assault and reckless endangerment charges after he pointed a gun at parents waiting for their children at a school bus stop in the 2700 block of Jay Bird Court, according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were called to the stop about 4 p.m. Thursday after people saw a man, later identified as Thaddeus C. Shortz, 19, of Knoxville, with a gun, the sheriff's office said.

An investigation revealed a school bus driving on Carlisle Court attempted to back up onto Jay Bird Court, the sheriff's office said. Shortz, who was driving an Acura passenger car, drove through a yard and around the bus. When witnesses saw him drive around the bus, they yelled at him to stop.

Shortz got out of his vehicle and pointed a handgun at adults who were waiting for children to get off the bus, the sheriff's office said. He then got into his vehicle and drove away.

Deputies arrested Shortz at his home on Jay Bird Court, the sheriff's office said. He was charged with three counts of first-degree assault and two counts of reckless endangerment.

Shortz was released from the Frederick County Adult Detention Center after posting $85,000 bail, authorities said.
