Originally published October 19, 2009

From Staff Reports

Maryland State Police have identified the driver of a Buick LeSabre who died after it struck a battlefield monument at Antietam National Battlefield Sunday morning before overturning into a stonewall and coming to rest on its roof.

Police said the car was traveling north in the 5600 block of Sharpsburg Pike when it ran off the road, struck a mailbox and a drainage ditch before becoming airborne and striking the monument at 11:21 a.m. The driver was identified as John Robert Miller, 86, of Boonsboro.

His passenger, Patsy Miller, 81, also of Boonsboro, was taken to Washington County Hospital. Hospital officials did not release information on her condition.

Both victims were wearing seatbelts.

Sgt. Andrew Smith of the Maryland State Police Hagerstown barrack said the crash is under investigation.
