Local briefs — Health Department cancels flu shot clinics
Originally published October 20, 2009

From Staff Reports

An overwhelming demand for flu vaccine has exhausted supplies of flu vaccine, and the Frederick County Health Department has canceled three October seasonal flu clinics.

However, the department has not received all the vaccine it ordered, according to a press release. Additional supplies are expected in November, when the Health Department will schedule additional clinics. The October clinics were to be held on the 22, 23 and 27.

According to the press release, a limited amount of seasonal FluMist vaccine remains available for free to children ages 5 to 11.

Appointments for that vaccination can be made by calling 301-600-3342. Information on flu clinics and vaccine availability can be found at www.frederickcountymd.gov/fluclinics.

Two legislative hearings this week

The Frederick County Commissioners are scheduled to hold two evening public hearings this week on their 2010 proposed legislative package.

The first hearing tonight will address county issues for consideration by the Maryland General Assembly.

These include a reduced state property tax for agricultural land and a pay-as-you-throw system for trash disposal.

The second hearing on Thursday will address statewide and federal proposals such as a Maryland partial birth abortion ban act and requiring pharmacies to accept unused medicines for proper disposal.

Both hearings will take place at 7 p.m., Winchester Hall, 12 E. Church Street. The public will be able to comment.

To read all the proposals, visit www.FrederickCountyMD.gov/legislative.

Public can weigh in on park

Brunswick residents are invited to share their opinions about the development of a 214-acre regional park planned by Frederick County.

City Zoning Administrator Bruce Dell will accept ideas at his e-mail address: planner@Brunswickmd.gov.

Dell said plans for the park include conserving 25 percent for natural habitat or wetlands. Sports fields and trails are also part of the plan. "It will not be all passive," Dell said. "It will be passive and active."

The property is bounded by Olive School Road, Md. 180 and Md. 79.
