Lions coordinating day to recognize military troops
Originally published October 22, 2009

From Staff Reports

This Saturday, for the fourth year, the Thurmont Lions Club is coordinating Make a Difference Day in Thurmont . The sole emphasis will be on local military personnel.

The club has developed a list of approximately 20 personnel serving overseas and are in the process of sharing the project throughout the community. When an organization, business or individual commits to participating, they are presented with a sign to post declaring "We Support Our Troops."

The Lions will host a reception at 1:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish Center to honor service members and their families. Included will be wounded veterans from Walter Reed Medical Center, who will be taking back snacks, DVDs and blankets made by local school children.

The Lions will also be remembering three local fallen servicemen, Robert Seidel, James Higgins and Eric Hayes.

Personalized packages also are being assembled for the military personnel, including favorite items and letters written by the community, as well as packages for spouses and children left at home. Included will be gift cards to grocery stores, restaurants and certificates for chores/tasks for which they may need assistance such as removing snow, raking leaves and babysitting.

For information, contact Susan Favorite, chairwoman of the Make a Difference Day Committee at 301-271-4020.
