Skateboarder dies from injuries

A Gov. Thomas Johnson High School student died this week from injuries suffered while skateboarding near his home on Carey Place, authorities said.

Police declined to release his name, but a family friend and a neighbor identified him as Pablo Serpas, 16. The teen suffered a head injury while skateboarding in the 1500 block of Carey Place at about 9:45 p.m. Sunday, said Capt. Kevin Grubb of the Frederick Police Department.

The injured teenager was flown to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for treatment, Grubb said. Police were notified of his death Thursday, he said.

Members of the teen's family declined to speak Thursday with The Frederick News-Post.

Serpas' death was a shock to Patty Klipp, a Carey Place resident. She was home Sunday night, and saw emergency personnel treating Serpas, she said.

"Police had the area lit," she said. "It was right there in front of our home."

She walked outside and saw medics talking to Pablo's mother, Klipp said.

"When they said they were going to medevac him out, she started crying," she said.

Skateboarding is allowed on the street, Grubb said. Police are investigating the incident, he said.
