Children’s book author Olga Jaffae was at Skate Frederick Sunday to sign copies of her two children’ books centered on ice-skating.
Children's book author Olga Jaffae grew up in Ukraine enjoying figure ice-skating as a spectator.

The Lancaster, Pa., resident said while she didn't have an opportunity to skate, many aspects of the sport lent themselves to ideas for her future stories.

Jaffae was on hand Sunday at Skate Frederick to sign copies of her two children's books centered on ice-skating.

Everything from princess dresses, to the fluid movements to the whimsy of judges, to the icy sheen of the rink in figure skating inspires Jaffae.

Her first book, "Cammie and Alex's Adventures in Skateland," was published about a year ago, while her newest in what she hopes to be a seven-part series, "Cammie and Alex's Adventures at Rainbow Rinks," is set to be released Dec. 15.

The books involve the adventures of children who overcome obstacles while wandering through "Skateland," developing friendships and overcoming obstacles set by the realm's witches.

The witches represent injuries, discouragement and other challenges young skaters face, she said.

Jaffae travels to local figure skating competitions to sell her books and interact with the denizens of what she sees to be an underappreciated sport.

Part of her goal, she said, is to inspire non-skaters and skaters to improve their skills at figure skating.

"Kids love to read about something they're doing," she said.
