Brooke Kennedy is breaking stereotypes, and blogging about it.The 15-year-old was chosen as one of four Junior Pro Staffers for the Generation Wild website, a spinoff of Field & Stream magazine. For a year, Kennedy will write about her experiences hunting and fishing, review gear and offer how-to advice to readers. She knows she can make a difference, even by offering just a few pointers. "A Generation Wild Junior Pro Staffer is like being a mentor for your younger readers on how to be a responsible and safe hunter and angler," she said. Kennedy also hopes her femininity will change some perspectives on a woman's capabilities. "I've gotten the reaction before (that) girls can't hunt and 'You couldn't have harvested that deer.' I would love to change these stereotypes," she said. The Catoctin High School sophomore said she has been fishing since age 3 and hunting since she was 9 years old. In her Generation Wild biography, she said her obsession with the outdoors began the day she was born, when her parents named her after the brook trout. With an outlet to share her excitement, Kennedy is not sure what she will write about. "I just want to make a difference in someone's hunting or fishing experience," she said. "I don't really have any formal experience with blogging," Kennedy said in an e-mail. "But, like any teenager, I am always on my cell phone, texting or taking pictures, and I am constantly in front of my computer." Kennedy got involved in the contest after seeing an advertisement in Field & Stream magazine. She said she was driven to enter because "I am a girl, and not too many girls really have a passion for hunting and fishing." Two 250-word essays were required for the contest: She had to describe herself and her experience outdoors and explain her interest in becoming a Generation Wild Junior Pro Staffer. "It is an amazing feeling to know that (the website) considered you and picked you out of the hundreds of entries they received," Kennedy said. "This is a huge opportunity, and it will be a great experience." Along with that experience, Kennedy and her fellow Junior Pro Staffers were awarded with a spring turkey hunt in Georgia, clothing, gear, a digital camera and a video camera. Kennedy called those extras that come along with the title. "I love hunting and fishing," she said. "It just pulls me in because it's something you can do on your own time and it just relaxes you." The outdoors also provides stress relief for the high schooler. "You don't have to worry about anything except the next deer you see or the next fish you hook."
