Middletown was the scene of a Halloween parade Thursday evening that included youngsters and adults in all varieties of costumes, area fire and rescue equipment and marching bands.
The Frederick County Sheriff's Office and other agencies offered tips about how children can enjoy a safe Halloween.

In a news release, the sheriff's office said that children under age 12 should trick-or-treat in familiar areas and in the company of adults or older responsible youths.

The sheriff's office suggests children only go to houses or apartment buildings that are well-lighted. Children should never enter a stranger's home, the agency said.

Parents are encouraged to dress children in light-colored costumes with strips of reflective tape to make children visible.

Masks can obstruct a child's vision, so facial makeup is preferred, the sheriff's office said. Flashlights help children navigate sidewalks at night.

Parents should insist that treats be brought home for inspection and when in doubt, throw it out, the sheriff's office said.

The Maryland State Highway Administration offered some tips about how drivers can help children be safe this Halloween. SHA suggests drivers be alert for children darting across streets and crossing between parked cars.
