John H. Adams was the first Frederick city police officer to die in the line of duty.On Aug. 9, 1922, Adams was trying to take William A. Stultz into custody in the area of Fourth and Bentz streets when Stultz shot him.
That was 87 years ago, but a new memorial to fallen officers demonstrates the community's ongoing appreciation. On Oct. 23, Adams' granddaughter, Frederick native Bonnie Ramsburg, came from Grantsville to attend the unveiling ceremony.
Police Chief Kim Dine, Lt. Clark Pennington, and Fraternal Order of Police President Charles Snyder commented on the extraordinary sacrifice officers like Adams make. Dine cited Adams and the department's other fallen officer, Richard Mark Bremer, as examples of good character.
Bremer died Oct. 23, 2008 from injuries suffered in a crash that happened while he was chasing a suspect.
Adams' great-granddaughter Karen Ramsburg of Mercersburg, Pa., appreciated the community's commitment to remember officers' greatest sacrifices. Her mother keeps a photograph of Adams in uniform prominently displayed at her home, Ramsburg said.
"This memorial service was a connection to past present and future fallen officers and their families, and as such is a living and ongoing memorial," she said.
The choices those two officers made to serve society demonstrate their wisdom about what matters most in life, Dine said.
Members of Bremer's family also attended the event. His parents, who live in Pennsylvania, said the Frederick community had shown them great affection.
The Rev. Kevin Farmer of Holy Family Catholic Community in Middletown prayed with the crowd of fellow officers and family who turned out to pay their respects. Time makes grief easier to bear, but does not eliminate it, he said.
"It never goes away."
The new memorial stone at 100 W. Patrick St. was donated by the family of police Sgt. Charles Cashour. He served the city from 1957 to 1985 and died at age 52 of natural causes.
The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 91 funded the engraving. Lough Memorials serviced and engraved the stone.
