Last week's unexpected bye didn't hurt the Maryland School for the Deaf's football team as it beat the Model Secondary School for the Deaf, 47-0, on Saturday. The Orioles had to cancel two games last week. MSD was to have played St. James School Thursday, Oct. 22, but an outbreak of the flu at St. James forced school officials there to close the campus for almost two weeks.
The Orioles had replaced the Saints with the Virginia Lions. That game was canceled early in the day because MSD coach and athletic director Andy Bonheyo said the Lions did not have enough players to field a team because of illness.
But no matter to the Orioles. In Saturday's rout of the Eagles in MSD's homecoming game, the Orioles (9-1) looked as sharp as ever.
"Having a bye week was good in some ways," MSD coach Andy Bonheyo said. "It gave our players a chance to heal. It has been a long season."
MSD scored on five of its seven first-half possesions and the game went into a running clock in the third quarter, a familar sequence for the Orioles in most of their games this year. MSD defeated the Eagles, from Washington, using a balance of running and passing.
On the ground, the Orioles rushed for 345 yards. Quarterback Todd Bonheyo completed 12-of-16 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.
Todd Rewolinski was the leading rusher for MSD with eight carries for 84 yards and two touchdowns. He scored the Orioles' first TD on an 11-yard run in the first quarter and added a 6-yard scoring run later in the quarter.
Rewolinski also caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Bonheyo in the fourth quarter to complete MSD's scoring in the game.
Ethan Kramer rushed for 70 yards on six carries and a touchdown. He scored on a 6-yard run in the first quarter.
Bonheyo's other TD strike went to Shawn Harrington on a 24-yard play in the third quarter, which triggered the running clock. Bonheyo scored a rushing touchdown of his own on a 7-yard bootleg in the second quarter.
Ty Heisey scored on a 4-yard run in the second quarter. MSD led at halftime, 34-0.
The Orioles' defense held Model to minus-2 yards rushing and 68 yards passing. Bonheyo intercepted an Eagles' pass in the third quarter.
