A steep embankment, thick brush and a dark Sunday night did not stop Frederick County Sheriff's K-9 Bayco and his partner Bart Ruppenthal. After an hourlong search, the two were able to find Robert S. Painter, 46, of Frederick , hiding behind a large downed tree in a wooded area, off I-70 near Linganore Road, Cpl. Jennifer Bailey said. Painter jumped the Interstate's guardrail and ran into a wooded area during a traffic stop about 10:30 p.m. He was stopped by Deputy First Class Kelly Hewitt for not having registration for the vehicle he was driving, she said. While Bayco and Ruppenthal searched the ground for Painter, a Maryland State Police helicopter looked for him by air. Once he was found, it took authorities about 40 minutes to get Painter, Ruppenthal and Bayco up the embankment, Bailey said. Ropes had to be thrown down to them. Painter had to be handcuffed in the front so he could pull himself out. Painter was charged with driving on a revoked license, driving without a license, attempting to elude police by fleeing on foot, driving an uninsured vehicle, operating an unregistered vehicle and driving without current tags. He was also wanted on an open warrant in Pennsylvania. Painter was previously sentenced to serve a 15-year prison term after he stole calves from two farms on Cap Stine Road in early 2002, according to the state Judiciary Case Search. Painter later sold them at an auction in Pennsylvania. He remained at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center Monday afternoon in lieu of $22,500, authorities said.
