Passersby can watch construction of a house at the corner of Motter Avenue and 13th Street. Students from the Frederick County Career and Technology Center are erecting the building, under the supervision of CTC teachers and professional builders who offer their time and expertise. When Frederick City adopted a residential sprinkler system requirement, one student was chosen to design the system -- Yovany Sanchez. Kennedy Fire Protection on Tilco Drive offered to work with students in architectural computer-aided design and plumbing to educate them on sprinkler system design and installation. Sanchez will work as an intern with Gene Walkley and Rick Pensinger at Kennedy Fire Protection, spending three hours a day designing the system for the student-built house. The system, which must be reviewed by the county fire marshal, will be installed at the house project. High school students interested in any of 24 construction-related fields taught at CTC should talk with school counselors to make arrangements to visit one of the programs.
