Visit FMH's operating room

Frederick Memorial Healthcare System will host its third annual operating room open house from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. today at Frederick Memorial Hospital, 400 W. Seventh St., Frederick .

Visitors can see two operating rooms, one set up for a laparoscopic procedure and the other for a joint replacement.

A video of a gallbladder removal shot inside the patient's body will be shown while the surgeon describes what he's doing. Visitors may then try out the laparoscopic surgical instruments in a simulated abdominal cavity.

In the second operating room, visitors may handle and examine models of the joints and the actual tools that doctors, nurses and technicians use in these common procedures.

FMH's pre- and post-operative areas will also be open. Anesthesiologists will also be on hand to demonstrate how patients are intubated to assist their breathing.
