The Mount Airy Main Street Association is organizing a "holiday sneak preview" of renovated stores on South Main Street, Thursday through Sunday in the plaza at 114 S. Main St.In 2007, a fire burned at least seven businesses and five homes, and caused several million dollars in damage at a block of stores on South Main Street. By mid-November, most of the renovated spaces will be open for business. David Scranton, the construction manager who oversaw renovations at 114 and 200 S. Main St., said he began work on the buildings right after the fire. About a year ago, Scranton finished 114 S. Main St., which has four storefronts, a hair salon and day spa on the second floor and other office tenants. Some of the shops that have taken up residence are Laurenzio Brick Oven Cafe, 144 S. Main St., A Do or Dye Salon and Day Spa, 116 S. Main St., Retro Metro, 116 S. Main St., The Hive, 112 S. Main St. and the Deja Vu Boutique, 118 S. Main St. The 200 S. Main St. building has two storefronts, one of which remains to be leased, and eight apartments, Scranton said. Finishing touches will be put on the building when all of the spaces are occupied, he said. Renovations required coordination as the worksite was next to some old buildings, confined to tight spaces and had limited access, he said. "It's really remarkable to see how it's changed in two years," he said. Scott Stohlman is the owner of Scribs Sports on South Main Street. He plans to open the sporting goods store by mid-November. The shop, which will focus on sports equipment and apparel, will be Stohlman's first business venture. Stohlman thinks many in Mount Airy are tired of having to drive long distances to patronize a sporting goods store. "We're going to give it a shot," he said.
