Company honors uniformed personnel

Company honors uniformed personnel

The Shumaker Roofing Company of Frederick filled a dining room Friday at the Mountain Gate Family Restaurant in Thurmont. The company bought lunch for a room full of local uniformed service personnel who were mostly police officers. Shumaker Roofing in Frederick has been in the area since 1946. On Friday, the company gave back to the community by honoring local service in uniform.

The program, held at Mountain Gate Restaurant in Thurmont , included awards to law enforcement officers, firefighters and a soldier for their outstanding achievements. The award winners were nominated by their supervisors.

Robert Shumaker, president, said the company holds quarterly luncheons for senior-aged customers.

"Shumaker Roofing is proud to recognize and honor all those who put themselves in harm's way to protect, defend and serve our community, state and nation," Shumaker said.

About 70 guests attended the event. The company also donated money to charities chosen by the award winners.

Honored were:

n Deputy Chief Steven Heller, Fort Detrick Fire and Emergency Services. With the department for more than 35 years, Heller is also a life member of the Independent Hose Co. He is an instructor and holds the Army's Civilian Achievement Award.

n Officer Christopher Handler, Brunswick Police Department. A graduate of the Frederick County Sheriff's Police Academy, Handler has been with the Brunswick police since 2005.

n Sgt. Christopher McLoughlin, Thurmont Police Department. A native of England, McLoughlin is the recipient of many awards.

n Cpl. Brett Etzler, Frederick County Sheriff's Office. With the agency 14 years, Etzler is a SWAT Team leader, emergency medical technician and a supervisor in the narcotics division. He was formerly with the community response section.

n Trooper First Class Richard Kulina, Maryland State Police. Joining the state police in 2002, Kulina holds degrees from Frederick Community College and Frostburg State University. He has been Trooper of the Year for three years and has been recognized for his outstanding efforts in stopping drunken drivers.

n Officer First Class Matthew A. Trageser, Frederick Police Department. A graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Trageser is with the K-9 Narcotics Unit.

n Spc. Ty Hunter, Fort Detrick. A medical specialist, Hunter works in aerobiological sciences and has been at Detrick for five years. He is pursuing advanced education in his field.

The procession to the Frederick Christian Fellowship Church was led by Frederick County Sheriff's deputies. Dressed in full military regalia, Marines carried Smith's casket into the church followed by family members as more Marines stood at attention.
