The Community Foundation of Frederick County on Monday honored its three 2009 Wertheimer Fellows for Excellence in Volunteerism: Miriam Lane of Union Bridge, Eugene Long of Thurmont and Frank Parsons of Frederick .Each honoree receives $10,000 to establish a new fund or to add to an existing fund with the Community Foundation. The foundation's Images of Impact 23rd Annual Report to the Community celebrated the volunteers' and the foundation's accomplishments. Lane is using the money to establish the Jane White Fund for Mission of Mercy. Lane provides free physical therapy to the poor who receive health care services from Mission of Mercy. Lane was inspired by White, the director of the Korean orphanage where Miriam and Jim Lane adopted their daughter, Whitney, in 1986. Lane, a retired physical therapist, is undergoing a fourth round of cancer treatment. Cancer and treatment have not stopped her volunteer work with Mission of Mercy or at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Taneytown. Whitney, 27, and Jim Lane were beaming while she stood on stage. "I'm just so tremendously proud of her," Jim Lane said. Long is using his award to establish The Davey Long and Mike Compton Memorial Fund in memory of his son, Davey Long, and his wife Shirley's son, Mike Compton. Grants are to be awarded in their honor, at the recommendation of the Longs and with the approval of the Community Foundation Board of Trustees. Long was recognized for his longtime commitment to the betterment of Thurmont , his church and other community efforts. Parsons' award will establish The Frank R. Parsons Fund for the National Museum of Civil War Medicine to support community education. The goal is to tell the story of medical care during the Civil War to the general public. Parsons received recognition for dedication to the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, Calvary United Methodist Church, American Red Cross, Cold Weather Shelter, Salvation Army and Frederick County Health Department. The Wertheimer Fellows for Excellence in Volunteerism Awards, in its seventh year, is named for the late Janis Miller Wertheimer of Frederick . Monday, Kathleen A. Costlow, the foundation's immediate past chairman, said more than 2,400 contributors donated to foundation funds in the past fiscal year. "More than $3.8 million was awarded in grants and scholarships between July 1, 2008, and June 30, 2009," she said. Foundation Chairman Andrew Carpel is proud of the accomplishments and the organization's mission. "It's a great way to distribute money from people who care to people who need it," he said. The foundation was established in 1986 to provide financial support for nonprofit organizations primarily serving the Frederick County area and to award educational scholarships to deserving Frederick County students.
