Even as winter approaches, Myersville residents are celebrating a return of the frozen treat with the opening of Main Street Market and Deli.

Occupying the same storefront previously held by Myersville Market and Deli and Ross's General Store, Main Street Market is a family affair for the Doerings of Canada Hill Road.

Husband and wife Mark and Beth Doering own the business, which provides jobs for their three children, Brad, 22, Corey, 20, and Tedi, 17. Brad and Corey predate their parents in the business -- both worked for the former proprietors.

"Corey worked here first and got me a job here," Brad said last week as he took a break from his duties.

Opening her own deli was a longtime dream for Beth Doering, who managed a seafood counter and deli for a grocery store chain in her hometown of St. Louis for about 20 years.

"I've always been a people person and I enjoy waiting on customers," she said. "I always wanted my own business, but the hours required for that weren't possible while the kids were small.

The Doerings moved to Myersville when Mark accepted a job in Maryland nine years ago.

Beth said the timing was good when the opportunity to reopen a mart in downtown Myersville arose. She continues to work another job three days a week, but hopes to eventually be able to work full-time at the deli.

"So far, it's been great," she said of the venture that opened Oct. 6. "I've appreciated the feedback, good and bad."

The shop owners are making improvements to the business all the time. They quickly responded to community requests that particular items be stocked.

"We want to carry what people need and want to buy," Mark said. "People are happy that Perky's Pizza, the Boar's Head products and Hershey's ice cream are back."

While the store doesn't offer delivery, that's in future plans, Mark said. Beth plans to beef up the menu with meals that offices could order for meetings, such as several-foot-long subs and sandwich rings.

"That's down the road a bit, but we have plans to grow the business and grow the menu," Mark said.

He also has a section of wall already reserved for a "campers wall."

"We've got three parks right down the road," he said. "We want to have everything here a camper might need -- and in small packages so they don't need to buy a whole lot of something they forgot to bring."

More immediately, the store owners plan to offer one service that should be appreciated by the community.

"We won't be doing any baking, but we will be open from 7 to 11 Thanksgiving morning," Mark said. "If someone discovers they forgot to buy something, they don't have to go far."

Beth laughed and said she planned to have plenty of whipped cream on hand for forgetful cooks.

Both Mark and Beth said they are happy with how they have been received by the community. Mark, who is looking for a job, is helping out temporarily.

Though they have lived in Myersville since 2000, Beth said one of her favorite parts of owning the shop has been discovering how tight-knit a town Myersville is and how much the town does for its residents.

"We've loved meeting all the people in the area," Beth said. "We enjoyed being involved in Trolley Fest and we're looking forward to Christmas in Myersville ."
