Police: Two employees robbed Greene Turtle

Sprunger
The Greene Turtle Sports Bar and Grille has two fewer employees to serve drinks and food today.

The Frederick Police Department arrested Zachary Ben Saltzman, 21, of Frederick , and Christina Nichole Sprunger, 19, of Brunswick , this week on charges that they conspired to rob the downtown restaurant they both worked for on Nov. 9.

Sprunger was the employee confronted by the "robber" while standing outside the closed restaurant, police said. Saltzman, who had a knife, walked into the restaurant with Sprunger and confronted a manager and another employee.

He took an undisclosed amount of cash and ran away, police said. A portion of the money was taken from Saltzman's home.

"We are deeply saddened by the events of last Sunday night but extremely thankful no one was hurt," said Leigh Sauter, director of marketing for The Illiano Group, which owns the Greene Turtle.

Saltzman and Sprunger, who worked as servers, have been fired. They had worked at the restaurant since summer.

"It's shocking and very scary knowing we have worked alongside these individuals not knowing they were capable of such a horrendous act," Sauter said.

She said the restaurant's management and staff appreciate the overwhelming support they have received from the community.

"We would like to thank the Frederick Police Department for diligently working on this case so our employees can rest a little better at night," Sauter said.

Saltzman and Sprunger were both charged with armed robbery, first-degree assault and theft, authorities said. Saltzman was also charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and Sprunger faces three conspiracy charges and a charge of second-degree assault.

Both remain at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center in lieu of $30,000 bail each.
