Book signing to benefit Animal ControlTwo dogs featured in a book about rescue canines will be on hand for a "pawtograph" session today to benefit the Frederick County Division of Animal Control.
Icarus and Shakespeare and their owners, Gwen Carr and Jennifer Alfonso, respectively, will be available from 5 to 7 p.m. at Two Paws Up, 15 S. Carroll St., Frederick .
Tales of Icarus and Shakespeare are among 53 included in Elise Lufkin's book "To the Rescue: Found Dogs With a Mission," released Nov. 1.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the book will benefit the Animal Control division, said Patty Cowan of Two Paws Up.
The public is encouraged to drop by the session to donate gently used pet supplies and to consider some of the animals available for adoption at the shelter.
Animal Control representatives will be available to take questions.
Police offer shopping safety tips
The Frederick Police Department provides the following holiday shopping safety tips for residents:
n Leave your purse at home. Put your wallet in your coat pocket or place credit cards, driver's license, money and keys in your pockets.
n If you must take a purse, take out all non-essential items and leave them at home. Even if you take your purse, it is still a good idea to remove your driver's license, credit cards, money and keys from your purse and put in your pockets.
n Park in a well-lit area and make sure your car is locked and all valuables such as GPS, electronics and CDs are out of sight.
n Stay in well-lit areas during hours of darkness and walk with others whenever possible.
n Don't overburden yourself with shopping bags. Make frequent trips to the car to place the items in your trunk. If you do not have a trunk, carry a blanket with you and cover the items so they are out of sight.
n If you have small children shopping with you, have a plan in place in case you get separated. Also, go over with them what to do if a stranger approaches them.
