The teenager who died after the Honda Civic she was riding in collided with a State Highway Administration dump truck at the intersection of Md. 180 and Holter Road Wednesday has been identified by Maryland State Police.
At about 1:58 a.m. today, the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma center in Baltimore notified the Maryland State Police that Kaitlyn Wilson, 17, of Jefferson , died, according to Sgt. Wayne Wachsmuth. Wilson was a student at Middletown High School.
In a letter sent home with Middletown High students, school principal Jay Berno said the Frederick County Public Schools crisis team was available to meet with groups and individuals.
The driver of the Honda is still listed in serious but stable condition, Wachsmuth said. Her identity has yet to be released pending further investigation into the crash.
The two occupants of the dump truck were taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and have been released, Wachsmuth said.
The Honda Civic was traveling south on Holter Road and the truck, which had a green light at the intersection, was traveling east at a constant speed on Md. 180, said state police Cpl. Dave Keller. At the intersection of Holter Road, the truck collided with the Honda Civic, Keller said. Both vehicles ended up in the eastbound lane of Md. 180, east of the intersection, according to the police press release.
Wilson and the car’s driver were flown to the trauma center by helicopter, Keller said.
Jefferson Volunteer Fire Company Chief Jimmy Lakin said when his company arrived on scene, firefighters saw the truck on top of the car and immediately called for support from Frederick .
Firefighters cut two people free from the wreckage. Within 20 minutes they had one of them out. Within five minutes of that, they had the other one free.
"It's the worst I've seen in 20 years," Lakin said.
People who live near the scene said they came out and saw the driver of the truck on the ground.
Zona Burford went up to him. "He was talking -- I told him not to move," she said.
The driver asked her if the passenger in the truck was OK. She looked in the truck and confirmed the passenger in it was OK, then ran back and held the driver's hand.
Burford went over to the car and put her hand on the leg of one of the passengers. She went back to the truck driver and told him not to move, help was on the way.
Another neighbor, Patrick Reed, said the Honda's driver was screaming, "Get me out of here, get me out of here."
He said he was pulling out of his driveway onto Holter Road near the intersection, when his daughter told him to wait -- she had to go back to the house.
The Honda went past them on Holter Road, according to his wife, Diana.
"The truck was driving east on 180. He tried to avoid it," Diana Reed said.
The intersection was closed for about three hours. The State Highway Administration, Frederick County Sheriff's Office and the Maryland State Police C.R.A.S.H. Team assisted at the scene. Fire companies assisting were Braddock Heights Volunteer Fire Company and United Fire Company of Frederick .
