Firefighters work to control a blaze that gutted this two-story farmhouse on Glade Road near Walkersville Monday night.
Walkersville -- Residents of a burning farmhouse on Glade Road rescued children and dogs Monday night.

The fire started with a mattress on a second floor bedroom then spread to other rooms nearby and into the attic and roof, said Micky Fyock, chief of the Woodsboro Volunteer Fire Company.

No one was injured, he said. The company was called around 6:30 p.m. and the fire was under control within an hour.

Firefighters attacked the second floor by opening up the roof, Fyock said. Woodsboro was assisted by many fire companies.

Because of the location of the house, no fire hydrants were nearby, so water had to be supplied through lines that ran the entire length of the long driveway.

The two-story, six-bedroom farmhouse on 10437 Glade Road is owned by Jim Stup. Several adults and children live there. Four children were in the house when the fire started, said Kendra Dahack who reported the blaze to authorities.

A 4-year-old alerted her to the fire, she said, by coming downstairs and telling her a blanket was on fire.

"My boyfriend went upstairs and then my niece, was sleeping in the bed right near where the fire was. We took her out and that's when I called the fire department," she said.

Another resident, Tim Jarvis, said he and some adults tried to extinguish the fire.

"It was a blanket on top of a mattress," he said.

He ran downstairs and helped the four children outside including his own 6-month old.

Earl Powell, a volunteer firefighter from the Woodsboro company, said when he arrived flames were coming out of both sides of the house.

"They made a good stop," he said.
