Go-go boots, taffeta and polyester suits decorated guests Saturday night at the sixth annual Retro Prom for the benefit of the Maryland Ensemble Theatre.

Attire and outfits went from subtle and chic to outlandish. Some dressed in classic black, others in mod swirls of every color under the sun. Wigs or real hair in styles as large as medicine balls and shag hairdos reminiscent of Rod Stewart (30 years ago) topped the heads of theater supporters.

Gené Fouché, MET associate artistic director, was enjoying the festive atmosphere and the success of the event. She expected to raise about $15,000 for the theater.

"People have been great," she said. "It just gets better and better."

Her 9-year-old daughter, Lena Janes, danced energetically around a donation tub in the center of the William R. Talley Recreation Center. Lena wore a sleeveless yellow go-go dress, tall white go-go boots and a peace necklace.

Dancing to an old rock 'n' roll song, Lena said, "I think it's awesome."

Surrounded by friends and two sisters, Amanda Glenn of Frederick was enjoying dinner before the dancing. She had on a pink prom dress.

"Just a fun way to spend a Saturday night," she said.

Janelle Maydak of Frederick had her bachelorette party with 11 bridesmaids at the event. A former theater performer, she said, "These are like my people."

Looking like Goldie Hawn or Twiggy, Jenifer Dobbins had on a psychedelic minidress and go-go boots. She does lighting design and choreography for the MET. Husband Bill Gardner was sporting what he described as a "horrible mint green" polyester tuxedo, with black piping, and a shirt with black piping on the ruffled button packet. Accents included a clip-on black velvet bow tie and white leather ankle boots that zipped.

Sue and Ed Johnson of Adamstown, newlyweds, donned shag wigs, enormous sunglasses like Elton John's, and had matching pantsuits of swirled psychedelic patterns. Sue Johnson's hot pink full-length go-go boots had heels several inches high.

"It's the highlight of the year," Ed Johnson said.
