Looters leave holes in National Park

Park rangers at Monocacy National Battlefield discovered several holes on the battlefield apparently dug by looters, according to an agency press release.

Rangers discovered the damage Sunday.

Anyone found guilty of violating or attempting to violate the act could face a jail sentence of up to a year and/or a fine of up to $10,000.

If costs to repair the disturbed site exceed $500, the violation escalates to a felony with a sentence of up to two years in jail and/or a $200,000 fine, the agency said.

A reward is being offered to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and successful conviction of the violator/s.

Anyone with information should contact Ranger Travis Baker, 301-698-6247 ext. 226, or 1-866-677-6677.

Two arrested after shot fired

New Market -- A Mount Airy man and a New Market juvenile face drug and weapons charges after a gunshot was reported Saturday evening, the Frederick County Sheriff's Office reports.

Just after 7 p.m., Deputy First Class Jeffrey Null went to a house on Wood Thrush Drive where a caller had reported hearing a shot and seeing two males with a handgun, Cpl. Jennifer Bailey said. Null saw a vehicle parked nearby. Inside were the driver, Christopher M. Hines, 18, and a juvenile, 17, who was not named.

The juvenile had a bullet in his possession, Bailey said.

Three handguns, two of them loaded, and several stolen license plates were in the trunk of the vehicle, Bailey said. The deputy found suspected marijuana, a digital scale, baggies and a pipe in the vehicle.

One of the guns had been fired inside a house on Wood Thrush Drive, but no injuries were reported, Bailey said.

Hines was charged with destruction of property, possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia and use of weapon as a separate crime.
