Post-high school options can seem daunting to many students and their parents, especially special-education students. The 14th annual Life After High School Transition Fair on Friday at Frederick Community College aims to make that transition as smooth as possible. Sponsored by FCC, Frederick County Public Schools, the Maryland Division of Rehabilitation Services, the Arc of Frederick County and Frederick County Workforce Services and Service Coordination, the fair offers information on postsecondary education and training opportunities, employment and tips for tackling the myriad paperwork involved with many services, programs and benefits. The program is free and open to Frederick County high school students receiving special-education services or Section 504 accommodations. The program will kick off with a motivational talk by James Pencola, a former FCPS student and now an assistant at Rock Creek School. "He'll talk about the need to set goals and strive to achieve those goals," Michele Weddle, the school system's high school special-education teacher specialist, said Wednesday. After the keynote address, participants can attend breakout sessions on a variety of topics and tour FCC's campus. An exhibitors fair will be held in the field house from 11:05 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Local agencies, employers, colleges and universities will have staff available to talk with students and parents individually, Weddle said.
