  • Mia Kim, a fourth-grader at Urbana Elementary School, is already a history buff.

As the winner of the state's "Ceremony of the Flags" essay contest, Mia will have a chance to be a part of history as the Frederick County flag bearer at Maryland's 375th anniversary celebration in historic St. Mary's City on Sunday.

In her essay, Mia discussed why she believed she should be chosen to represent Frederick County as a flag bearer. Mia is Korean. If she were part of the event, she wrote, it would show that there is no racism left in Frederick County.

"It's the inside that counts," she wrote.

Mia, a member of the History Club at her school, said most of the students in her class entered the essay contest. When she found out she had won, she was excited.

"I screamed in joy," she said. "This is the first time I've actually won a contest or anything."

Tabitha Kim, Mia's mother, said Mia wrote the essay completely by herself.

"She was very secretive about it," she said.

Not surprisingly, Mia's favorite subject in school is history.

"It's fun to know about what people did back then," she said. "It's easier to memorize everything."

Dan Flitton, Mia's teacher, encouraged his class to enter the essay contest and said that Mia is a determined and hard-working student.

"She's also a confident and thoughtful writer -- a real talent," Flitton said.

At the state anniversary celebration, a student from each county and the city of Baltimore will carry their respective flag in the Ceremony of the Flags parade. Mia said she will attend the celebration with her family, who moved to Frederick from Germantown when she was 2 years old.

The event will also feature wreath-laying and speeches, with Gov. Martin O'Malley as the keynote speaker.

Carrying the Frederick County flag is the first step for Mia in making her way into history. She said she would like to be famous one day for "probably academics or inventing something."

"History is fun to study," she said. "And if I could actually go down in it someday, it would be a really great honor."
