Poster contest takes aim at litter

The City of Frederick 's Neighborhood Advisory Council 7 hopes to inspire students' creativity while encouraging them to be more aware of the environment.

Students from North Frederick Elementary School, Gov. Thomas Johnson Middle School, Gov. Thomas Johnson High School and the Banner School are encouraged to create posters with the theme of reducing litter in their neighborhoods.

Every year, each NAC receives $1,000 from the city to do a project or hold an event. This is the first time the poster contest has been held.

"This year we just had a new idea about anti-littering in the neighborhood," said Carol Krimm, a member of NAC 7.

Krimm said the poster contest will help heighten students' awareness about littering everywhere, not just in their own neighborhoods.

"Littering does create an eyesore, and it's not environmentally correct," she said, noting that the railroad tracks along East Street are covered with trash and broken bottles. "It's just unsafe for the children."

A winner from each school will receive a $100 gift card, while additional gift cards will be presented for second place, third place and honorable mention.

Each poster must be no larger than 24 by 36 inches. Winning entries will be displayed in City Hall, Krimm said.

Posters must be submitted by May 15, and winners will be named on or before May 29.

"I hope a lot of students participate," Krimm said.
