Officials are on the lookout for illegal fireworks

County and state fire marshals will be out in communities Saturday to handle complaints about residents discharging illegal fireworks. The fire marshals will confiscate any illegal fireworks. Civil penalties of $500 for each firework as well as criminal penalties may be imposed.

In Frederick County, only ground-based sparkling devices, gold label hand-held sparklers and certain novelty items are legal. It is illegal to discharge, allow the discharge, or possess fireworks with the intent to discharge in Maryland. Fireworks that explode, shoot into the air or travel along the ground are illegal.

Authorities ask that private citizens leave fireworks displays to trained professionals. Upcoming public fireworks displays in Frederick County include:

-- Saturday at Ceresville Mansion and Baker Park

-- July 10, 11, 12, 24, 25 at 26 at Harry Grove Stadium

-- July 11 at Adventure Park

-- July 15 at Urbana Elementary School
