As the eighth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks nears, several Frederick County groups and organizations plan to mark the day with benefits, days of activity and gatherings.Volunteer Frederick recently signed an official partnership with the Frederick County Builders Association in honor of the Sept. 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance.
The builder's association provided a landscaper to design gardens in front of North Frederick Elementary School and Frederick High School for a City of Frederick Education Commission project.
Residents are providing a day of service to the schools as part of this beautification process from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday.
Cafe 611 on North Market Street will host a National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Benefit from 9 p.m. to midnight Friday.
Live music will be provided by "Hicktown."
The Frederick County Board of Commissioners will host a Sept. 11th tribute from noon to 12:30 p.m. today in the first floor hearing room of Winchester Hall.
The Frederick County Sheriff's Office will present a color guard at the event, and local officials, including county commissioners and fire and rescue officials, will speak.
The Debbie Williams Trio will lead the audience in singing patriotic songs.
The event will be broadcast live on cable Channel 19 and on www.co.Frederick .md.us/video.
Brunswick will remember the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, with an event at 7 p.m. Friday at Square Corner Park.
The event will be opened with a musical prelude performed by David Throne with the Frederick Scottish Pipes and Drums. Master of Ceremonies Rick Weldon will introduce Faith Assembly of God Pastor Gary Heffler, who will offer the invocation and concluding benediction.
Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 142 will present the colors and Olivia Frech will sing the national anthem.
Mayor Carroll Jones will introduce the guest speaker, Chip Jewell, director of Frederick County Department of Emergency Communications. Weldon will speak on behalf of Brunswick Volunteer Ambulance Co. 19 and Fire Co.
