Festival to be held

The Carollton Manor Community Festival will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the carnival grounds in Adamstown .

There will be a parade and float contest with prizes and trophies awarded to the winners.

The event will also include live entertainment, face painting, a magician and fire safety demonstrations.

Tranquility Farm yard sale

Tranquility Farm Equestrian Education and Renewal Center of Thurmont will conduct its second fundraising yard sale of the year Friday and Sept. 19 beginning at 7 a.m. at the farm at 11819 Whates Lane, Thurmont .

All proceeds from the sale will benefit Tranquility Farm, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that rescues horses that therapeutically help people. For information and directions, visit www.tranquilityfarmequestrian.com.

'Stop smoking' classes offered

The Frederick County Health Department is offering a Stop Smoking for Life program beginning Wednesday.

Stop Smoking for Life is a free smoking cessation program that is available to the public. Participants learn what triggers tobacco use, how to cope with stress, behavior modification, relapse prevention and more. Free nicotine patches and gum are available for class members, with a doctor's permission.

The next class will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Frederick County Health Department, 350 Montevue Lane, Frederick . The class meets Wednesdays and Fridays for three weeks, followed by two support group meetings. Classes and support group meetings will be held in the second-floor conference room, Room 2-139.

Event to benefit local child

Get tips on photographing your children and help raise money for Jackson Day, a local 5-year-old boy who was born prematurely and still must be fed through a tube. The event is 3:30 to 5 p.m. today in Baker Park at Fleming Avenue, in the playground by the pool.

All proceeds will benefit Jackson via the Patty Pollatos Fund. The funds will pay for the medical program that Jackson needs to be able to live without a feeding tube.

Golf tourney to benefit Middletown High stadium

Golfers are still needed for a tournament being held Thursday to benefit the Middletown High School Sports Club and its stadium project.

The tournament at Maryland National Golf Club will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Breakfast and registration will begin at 7:30 a.m.

The cost is $125 per golfer and $500 per foursome. Hole sponsorships cost $100. Door prizes will be awarded, and a hole-in-one contest with prizes of a car, golf clubs, a vacation getaway and a GPS unit will also be held.

FHS project rescheduled

A project to help beautify Frederick High School in honor of the Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance was postponed due to rain.

The event was planned for Friday but has been rescheduled for Monday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., said Lisa Orr, executive director of Volunteer Frederick .

Volunteer Frederick recently signed an official partnership with the Frederick County Builders Association in honor of the service day.

The association provided a landscaper to design gardens in front of North Frederick Elementary School and Frederick High School for a City of Frederick Education Commission project.

Work at North Frederick Elementary School went on Friday as scheduled.

Purse stolen from grocery cart
A purse was stolen from a grocery cart at Giant Eagle on West 7th Street around 8:25 p.m. Monday, according to a Frederick Police Department press release. The suspect fled the area but police found her. During a search of the suspect, police found a small quantity of crack cocaine and a smoking device used for crack cocaine, police said.

Priest sentenced to 10 years probation for sex offense

A Roman Catholic priest was sentenced Monday in Montgomery County Circuit Court to 10 years probation for sexually abusing an altar boy at a Germantown church more than seven years ago.

In July, the Rev. Aaron "A.J." Cote pleaded not guilty and was convicted of third-degree sex offense after Judge Louise G. Scrivener heard an agreed upon statement of facts.



Bank robbery reported
MOUNT AIRY — The New Windsor State Bank on Twin Arch Road was robbed, according to the Maryland State Police in Westminster.
