Three injured in crash; driver charged

Brunswick -- Three people were in critical condition at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore after a single-vehicle crash about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, authorities said.

The crash happened in the 3800 block of Olive School Road, according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office.

The driver, Michael Dean Shumaker, 19, of Knoxville, was arrested after he left the scene, spokeswoman Cpl. Jennifer Bailey said. He was later found in a relative's yard on Md. 464. He was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Crash halts eastbound I-70 traffic

Mount Airy -- It was a messy commute for hundreds of people Tuesday morning after a tractor-trailer crash shut down all lanes of eastbound I-70 for several hours.

No one was injured, according to Maryland State Police.

A 1998 International tractor-trailer driven by Benjamin Grimes of West Virginia was traveling east about 4 a.m. Tuesday on I-70 near Bill Moxley Road, police said. For unknown reasons, the tractor-trailer jackknifed, causing the metal railing it was hauling to scatter across the interstate.

The tractor-trailer was then hit by a 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Dean Boyd of Garrett County, police said.

A 2007 Volvo tractor-trailer driven by Jeffrey Hester of Missouri then hit several of the large metal railings in the road, police said. The metal damaged the undercarriage of the vehicle and ruptured the fuel tank. Several gallons of fuel spilled onto the interstate; fire officials cleaned it up.

The ages of the drivers involved were not available.

All eastbound lanes and both shoulders of I-70 were closed for three hours, police said. One lane was reopened around 7 a.m.

All eastbound lanes were reopened several hours later, after the metal railings were cleaned up and the tractor-trailer was moved.

Tint violation leads to arrest

GREEN VALLEY -- Having a tint violation and a partially covered license plate led to drug charges for a Ijamsville man, according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office.

A deputy initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Derek Steven Pires Kolokythas, 19, about 12:50 a.m. Saturday on Md. 80 near Green Valley Elementary School, deputies said. The vehicle stopped a third of a mile after the deputy tried to pull it over.

An investigation revealed Kolokythas had a smoking device and suspected marijuana, authorities said. He was charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Kolokythas was released on personal recognizance and has a Dec. 17 court date.
