Middletown — The Westboro Baptist Church will be protesting the Wood family funeral Friday, said church member Shirley L. Phelps-Roper.
The Kansas-based group alerted the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office they would be protesting, said Cpl. Jennifer Bailey.
The group has traveled around the country, protesting funerals of soldiers killed in combat, claiming God is punishing American soldiers because of Americans' tolerance for homosexuality.

I understand, some churches do not approve of suicide, but the wife and children did not commit suicide, they were murdered.They deserve a respectful funeral service. I am also attending a funeral in the Middletown area on Friday morning for a close family member. I don't understand people like this at all. It's easy to become angered by them, and the families definitely don't deserve this aggravation on top of their grief. I know it's hard, but it's best to ignore them and not give them the attention they seek. Their actions are certainly not what is taught in the Bible.

A good plan is to do what they did at the Matthew Shepherd funeral when these morons showed up- surround the group (as they are usually cordoned off by police and ploice tape) with large banners or signs that block theirs so that the family cannot see them, and it's legal, and nobody gets hurt. Although I kind of like the Hell's Angel's idea as well.

A church based in Topeka, Kansas, is scheduled to demonstrate next month outside Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda because the school, which opened in 1962, is named for a man who may have been homosexual. The church Internet site says a picket is scheduled for the afternoon of April 24. A narrative on the event states that the school's name "certainly explains A LOT about Maryland." ..

Just as a warning... I've delt with them before and they are not new to this area. Remember them protesting a Church at In The Streets 2006? Remember a few days later they were at the Emmitsburg Firemanss Memorial? They(the WBC) make LOTS of money doing this thing and suing the pants off of anyone that lays a finger on them. I hate the idea of a counter-protest marring the sanctity of the funeral itself. We need to find out what they drive and stop them from even getting TO the funeral!

They tried this at a church just outside of Ft. Knox, KY. The local fire dept set up a fire engine and police cars separated the protesters from the funeral procession. The locals all stood on the sidewalks waving their American Flags. It was successful. The awful church group left early. Hopefully someone can think of something to do so the family here doesn't have to go through this.

you_need_to_listen - I am currently talking about this very issue with some others who have delt with them before. We are currently divides, as i assume everyone is, on what to do. When they came to Frederick last time, We simply surrounded them so that the local FAMILIES did not have to see their VERY visable hatefull signs. However, in a case like this, where a family is going through something terrible, we are being cautious and weighing a few actions. If possible the best thing would be to block them from even getting there. I know i want to remain as respectful to the family as possible... but at the same time show them that we are here to support them from this hate group.

Matthew2783 is right. I was toe to toe with Shirley Phelps-Roper at the In The Streets event as well as in Emmitsburg. She told me I was too fat to wear shorts. She's a classy gal. When they hit Emmitsburg a few of us got together with our drums and drummed beats to drown them out. They were screaming at the children going into the service that day that their parents were lyin to them and their priests were going to soil them etc etc. They make most of their money each year in lawsuits. If you read up about them, they are a sick, sick group. I've been following them for about 4 years now and they never fail to shock me. The best idea I've seen is to stop them from actually getting to the funeral, but since that is improbable, I'm not sure what else to suggest. They are normally across the street from the scene of wherever they are protesting because of legal issues. They bring their small children who look confused but are holding malicious signs. I may go out there but I hate to think our attention is fueling their fire.

This particular funeral is outside their mission statement they stated because it's not a funeral for a service person either active or retired. Storms, as sincere as I know your post is meant to be, I don't think it's human nature, (especially for posters here ;) ) to just "take someone's word for it" and leave it alone. This isn't a church, or even a "group" it's ONE family. They bring their 4 and 6 year olds out to hold signs, it's a family affair. It would be convenient to have a couple of accidents in the area to hold up traffic on 70, 40, 17 etc.. Or how about a traffic stop for the infamous "Equipment Violation" followed by the Frederick search. Their cars are well marked with all of their messages of hate written all over them. I took pleasure in getting in front of them one morning on 70 then pacing the car next to me just to slow them down to where ever they were going. A nice 18 wheeler rolling protest of high diesel prices would work as well.

Initially I thought this "news" shouldn't be posted but after some consideration, I think the FNP did the right thing. Imagine if no one knew about their plans and they had unencumbered access to the funeral. Terrible. Thinking longer term, if this group is targeting funerals in MD for some polical reason, why can't a law be passed keeping the protesters long distance from the service? 1st amendment says they can protest but they have no right to disrupt a funeral of all things. It's a shame a law is needed to have a peaceful funeral these days but the law is the best way to stop them.

I was there the day we counter-protested against this group at In The Streets & at the fire academy. They were kept further away at the fire academy due to secret service police but they were directly across from the church and they chanted loud and shouted profanities. They will get as close to the funeral as possible. This group is defiant and don't care if they are arrested. I agree with Lost in that we should surround this group to block them, turn our backs to them and sing hymns to drown them out. It's the only way the family will be able to lay their loved one's to rest. Ignoring them, they will push their way through the crowd and get as close as possible for the family to hear. Trust me, these folks don't care what comes out of their mouths.

I did some quick research on this Church and different protests they have done. They have been blocked by large sections of
Fire equipment blocking their view and every time they started to holler the siren would go off, it also worked for a soldier when they had a police/Irish band there and played bagpipes to block them out. Also police blocking traffic and directing traffic in front of them so they cannot get to the cemetery until after the grave side ceremony is done. Just some heads up

Its not the Hells angels who go to the funerals. It is the Patriot Guard Riders or the American Legion Riders. These are Motorcycle Clubs made up of Veterans and they are there to stand between the family and the protestors. They are peaceful and respectful and are invited by the family. The video I linked earlier is a BBC documentary that was done by a journalist (Loui Theroux) who "lived among the members of the Westboro Baptist Church" for a few days, in order to figure out why they'd "created such a strange ministry." I think it is well worth watching. It gives first hand insight these people and how they think. In their own warped way, these people thrive on getting ANY attention, including angry responses from people. It helps spread their message. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. They've gone through more than what any family should ever have to go through and now, they have to endure these so called Christians. WBC doesn't even deserve to be called Christians. They don't practice anything close to what Christianity is or is supposed to be. They're evil and they don't belong here on earth.
My prayers and thoughts remain with the Bilotti-Wood families as they struggle through this unthinkable tragedy.

The Patriot Guard Riders go when they are invited by the family of the deceased and when they determine appropriate to do so. Inviting yourself to "stand" in the way is not the same and such a comparison should not be made.

A disruption of their personal moments by this pathetic cult is intolerable; however, a barage of well meaning community members is also a disruption (no matter how silent you insist you will be). Who gets to choose which disruption, if any, this family must endure?

I pray for this group of people, that they re-read the bible and figure out which God they're serving, because it definately isn't my Lord Jesus Christ.

What would protesting this funeral accopmplish? what does this group hope to gain? and the thing that kills me the most is the fact that they want to throw God's name into the middle of their madness!! Everyone has a right to free sppech and peaceful protest and all of that but where do you draw the line?? These people are SICK!

I have a theory that this protest is personal for the church. They were run out of Frederick city last year, and the press announcement cited this. The press statement says "they're dropping like flies for Maryland's sodomite sins in persecuting westboro baptist church". I really think that this church came here to protest just to get back at us.

Ladies and Gentlemen please do not do anything as in touching these people. They will have thier own lawyers there videotaping what happens. This is how they fund themselves. They will wait to be touched then sue in court. We have dealt with this group for years now. Enlist the help of the Patriot Guard,use the Fire Department(its kinda hard to see over fire engines). These cowardly people WILL place thier children in front of the adults!!!!!! Above all be respectfull to the grieving family by not antagonizing this group.

MIDDLETOWN- At Holy Family tonight Father Kevin said he, the family, & Sheriff's Dept. are asking for no counter-protest. They LOVE the sentiment, but have a plan for the WBC to get absolutely no attention. Keep the family in our hearts and prayers ?

We had over 50 confirmed guests but I got word that the families have asked that we don't even give the WBC the time of day. I am choosing to comply with that wish out of respect for the family. If the leaders in the church would do what the Bible requires them to do then we would have fewer situations like this. Question how can a family attend church and receive no support. There should be support groups along with continued felloship as a deterent from actions like this.

I have lived in Middletown all my life. I know the Billotti family from years ago. I’ve lost contact, but I know they are in my heart during this time of mourning.
That being said, I remember a story, whether true or not, of a young marine, having served his time for his country, was enrolled in a college class to further his education. The professor was sharing his extensive knowledge on the subject, and stated something to the effect that there is no GOD, because “if there is such a being, let him strike me down where I stand.” As the story goes, the young man stood up out of his lecture chair, strode up to the podium where the professor stood, and knocked him off of the stage. He stated, as he stood over the bewildered mentor, “GOD was very busy today, so he sent me in his place.”
I don’t advocate violence in any instance, especially for a solemn occasion such that will take place for the Billoti and Wood families on Friday, however, the message should be clear. GOD will be there, for sure, but all of HIS messengers, our community, and anyone else who is so taken by this tragedy, should also be there to make sure that any of these protesters, who have been so misled in their beliefs, do not interfere with the proceedings.
We, collectively, need to be that marine. We need to show these lunatics that this is not a stage for them to promote their agenda. Let’s do it peacefully. Let’s do it in respect for all those involved. But let us all make sure that these “protesters” don’t get their end goal, which is more news press for their cause.
