School Notes — Elementary report cards have new look
Originally published November 10, 2009

When elementary students bring home their Frederick County Public Schools report cards this Friday -- and whose idea was it to issue the reports on Friday the 13th? -- they'll have a different look than those of previous years.

Each elementary grade will have a distinctly different report card designed to track progress content areas specific to each grade, according to a press release.

The reports will also note the instructional level being received: Essential curriculum, essential curriculum with enrichment, essential curriculum with intensive intervention, or an alternative curriculum based upon an Individualized Education Program.

Content mastery will be indicated in a section separate from mastery of skills such as task completion, organization and ability to follow procedures and work effectively as a team.

Samples of the new report cards can be viewed online at www.fcps.org/reportcards.

Here's hoping those new report cards contain lots of top grades!

Milton Creagh to speak to parents

Middletown High School's PTSA, Student Government Association and administrators invite all parents to a free anti-drug presentation at 7 p.m. today in the school's auditorium.

Milton Creagh, former host of the national PBS television series "Parenting Works," will present a program titled "Parenting is Prevention."

One of Creagh's main messages is that parents are the most critical component in their child's development and ability to remain drug-free.

The evening program for adults will follow three daytime assemblies for Middletown students. Creagh was scheduled to make presentations Monday at Brunswick and Smithsburg High schools. He will hold assemblies for Middletown and Myersville Elementary school students Wednesday.

FCC alumni meeting

The Frederick Community College Alumni Association will meet at 5 p.m. Thursday in Room A201, in A Building on the Opossumtown Pike campus.

All alumni are welcome to attend. For information, call the FCC Office of Institutional Advancement, 301-846-2438, or send an e-mail to alumni@Frederick .edu.

Calling all tots

Story-Time Tots, a program for 3- and 4-year-olds, will be held at 8:45 a.m. Monday at St. John Regional Catholic School, 8414 Opossumtown Pike.

This month's theme is Turkey Feathers. Stories, craft activity and refreshments will be provided.

Reserve your child's spot by calling Jean Wright, 301-695-9358, or send an e-mail to jwright@sjrcs.org.

Marching band kudos

The Gov. Thomas Johnson High School marching band performed at the U.S. Scholastic Band Association National Championship on Saturday.

The event was held at the U/S. Naval Academy's Navy and Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis.

T.J. High's band placed fifth in the field of 20 competitors. The group performed a presentation titled "1980-89 -- A Decade in Review."

The band is under the direction of Christina Caulfield. Drum majors are Megan Fowle and Lucas Hogan.
