Eleanor L. Rappold. Two things, among the many beneficial things my mother taught me, were sewing and playing the piano. But it was more than just her teaching and my learning these skills. As these things grew into my everyday life, in retrospect I see they helped pave the road to learning more important lessons in life: appreciating the value of enjoying the fruits of my own labors, to be resourceful, frugal, and open-minded. So never mind how much I bulked or complained at her gentle insistence and welcome encouragement during times of practice the lessons or finish the dress you started. What I didn’t see as a child was that the lessons were disguised as part of preparation for life. No, I don’t have my own line of fancy clothing nor has Carnegie Hall ever knocked at my door. But I do have much satisfaction. How clever my mother was then and still is today. I’m so proud to be your daughter! Thank you for all these lessons, and especially for the time and energy you and dad gave. I still learn daily how to be a better person from watching and listening to my mother and father.
