Antietam Village Center destroyed in fire (Feb. 19)

A robbery attempt at Jim's Liquors at Antietam Village Center ended in a three-alarm blaze that killed James Douglas, who was trying to rob the store. No one else was injured in the fire.

Urbana High student killed in crash; driver indicted on nine criminal and traffic charges (March 10)

Nicholas Gaines was indicted on manslaughter and homicide charges related to the March 10 automobile crash that killed Tyler Murray, a fellow Urbana High School student.

Schoolteacher convicted of threatening to blow up children sentenced to jail time and home detention (June 27)

Michelle J. Dohm, the sixth-grade teacher found guilty of sending the bomb threats during a seven-month period, was sentenced to nine months behind bars in the Frederick County Adult Detention Center.

Mount Airy blaze damages seven businesses (Sept. 2)

Seven businesses and five households suffered more than $4 million in damages, according to the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company.

Jarrel Gray dies after being struck by a police Taser (Nov. 18)

Gray, 20, fell to the ground unconscious after Frederick County Sheriff's Office Cpl. Rudy Torres shocked him with a Taser. The Taser was used on Gray twice, the shocks coming 23 seconds apart. Gray was pronounced dead about two hours later at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

State lawmakers raise $1.3 billion in new taxes in a three-week special session this fall (Nov. 20)

The special session, called by Gov. Martin O'Malley, ended with approvals of roughly $1.3 billion in new taxes and $550 million in suggested cuts to increases for fiscal 2009.

Twenty people, nine of them children, die as a result of domestic violence (Continuing coverage)

From March 26 to Dec. 20, the region was rocked with seven domestic violence cases from Upper Montgomery County to Frederick County to Washington County

Immigration has caught the attention of Frederick County residents. Issues ranging from overcrowding to a proposal that, if passed (it did not), would have denied public benefits to those who cannot prove they are in the country legally.

Many Walkersville residents oppose a proposed Muslim worship and recreation center in town.
