20 Years Ago SMITH ISLAND — Seventeen high school students ditched their classes two weeks ago for three days of island life in the Chesapeake Bay’s friendly waters. They weren’t seeking sun, surf and sail, or a few days off school. Rather, they set out to learn about ecology, estuarine (bay water) and environment. Three people were injured Sunday afternoon when a roof truss on a house under construction collapsed on them. Two unidentified women, who were pinned under the truss, were extricated by rescue personnel from Boonsboro, Brunswick and Community Rescue Service.
50 Years Ago Six colored boys were assessed fines ranging from $100 to $25 or commitments to juvenile quarters in the county jail in companion cases heard in Juvenile Court this morning. The boys were six of nine involved in molesting young white trick or treaters October 26.
100 Years Ago In order to restrict negro suffrage Governor Crothers announced yesterday that he would advocate the submission of another constitutional amendment at the next general State election, which will be in November, 1911. Dr. David Lowenstein, of this city, who is a member of the board of directors of the Baltimore and Washington White Cross Milk Company and has been looking after the erection of the company’s plant here, has received a telegram stating that the first of the concentrators for the plant have been shipped.
