Fredric Scire is part of a group making a 4,300-mile cross country trip this summer. But it isn't your normal journey. Fredric and his friends will be making their way from Seaside, Ore. to Yorktown, Va. on bike. That's right, they'll be pedaling their way across 11 states. Fredric will maintain a journal about his travels and take photos of his trip. To follow the 10-week voyage, be sure to check back often.

Finished! The journey is over
This was a tough ride under very trying circumstances, but as I said at the beginning, it was a challenge, and the serendipity was there.

Coming down the homestretch
After leaving Athens, Ohio, I rode 20-plus miles to Coolville, Ohio — wish the temps reflected the name of this town! — where I took a long rest waiting on the heat of the day to ebb.

Sweating out the first 3,000 miles
Temperatures were over 100 degrees again, with more blasted humidity, and we had busy truck traffic throughout, especially going through Saint Joseph where the terrain is like a roller coaster.

Into the heat of the Plain States
We went 58 miles today, averaging about 10 mph, and wound up in Brownville after an absolutely exhausting five hours and 55 minutes of riding through stifling heat and humidity.

The halfway point
Once we got out of Williston, we cruised for 40 miles along rolling hills, beautiful countryside and wheatfields -- but there was no shade to be found.

North Dakota, here we come
We crossed the border into North Dakota, after 800 miles across Montana, and experienced the "state line" dance with great glee.

Keep on keepin' on
The territory we've been riding through has been rolling plains for as far as you can see. I sure believe that some settler's wife named Geraldine got fed up and just told her husband "stop the horses, I am getting out, this is far enough" Good story, just maybe.

Biking through Big Sky Country
We had a beautiful ride along the southern shore of the Columbia River Gorge. Desert cliffs on the right and calm blue waters on the left.

We're on our way!
This is the last missive before the plane at 2:45 p.m. this coming afternoon. Bags have been packed, repacked, resorted, etc. Items
thought necessary have been discarded and new items added. No matter how hard I try, it still amounts to 43 pounds of gear! For my own benefit, I checked my weight too. I am now at 193 pounds. How much can I possibly lose on this trip? Should be interesting. Check on return. (Lost 25 pounds on last trip.)

We prepare
In the summers of 2003 and 2004, I cycled the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route from the Canadian border at Roosville, Mont., to the Mexican border at Douglas, Ariz. This 2,470-mile adventure followed single track trails, forest service, and BLM roads through some of the most pristine and beautiful portions of the United States. Maps of the trail were provided by Adventure Cycling Association in in Missoula, Mont.
