BDM Key Findings

A review by The Frederick News-Post of USAMRIID's biological defense mishap reports between April 1, 2002 and Dec. 1, 2005 uncovered the following:

  • Many potential exposures would have been prevented if researchers involved followed protocol, based on mishap report comments that individuals weren't following safety procedures.

  • In a 2005 incident revealing safety problems, routine testing showed anthrax spores tracked into areas within containment but outside laboratories, leading three people to report a potential exposure.

  • A 2005 mishap report involved a breach in protocol that could have posed a risk of anthrax exposure and disease. An employee's nasal swabs tested positive for spores of a non-disease-causing anthrax strain after failing to use proper safety measures.
