I still think its absurd to even have such a facility near one of the fastest growing cities on the Eastern shore. Yes, perhaps some token security measures were implemented after the 2002 incident, however, nothing is fail-proof. Even the 1% chance of something going wrong is too high of a chance for me. Would it really be that hard to move this facility out to the middle of the desert or something? Of course then again, that brings up important economic questions as well. I realize that some people's jobs rely on Fort Deterick and shutting down the facilities would have an adverse effect on their lives. I would know, a member of my family works there. It's a cruel world where one has to choose between being able to pay for their children's college or constantly being under the threat of biological attack.

they were "doing everything they can" when the anthrax was stolen/leaked/who knows...to me, that doesn't lead to an overwhelming feeling of safety. And then there are those pesky "why are the cancer rates in the greater Frederick are so high" questions, which are either ignored or denied without any compelling studies to prove the govt.'s point. ah well, I suppose we just need to grin and bear it - all in the name of jobs, right? Nevermind health and peace of mind.

Considering, to date, we still don't know who took the weaponized anthrax from Ford Detrick that was used in the letters that resulted in the deaths of five people, I don't feel safe!

Please note that USAMRIID significantly improved its biosafety and biosurety programs after 2002. I am confident that the vigilant, dedicated and professional staff at USARMIID will continue to do everything they can to protect the Nation and the Frederick community.
