Of the 465 local bridges in Frederick County that are maintained by either the county’s Public Works Division, Maryland’s State Highway Administration or various municipalities, 14 are classified as structurally deficient, meaning the bridges should not carry more than a certain vehicle weight limit.

** - Structurally deficient bridges’ load- carrying elements are often found to be in poor condition because of deterioration and are often posted with weight limits to restrict the gross weight of vehicles using them. A bridge classified as structurally deficient is not necessarily unsafe.

*** - A Functionally obsolete bridge refers to one that does not meet today’s criteria. Those built to standards that are not used today are not unsafe, but typically the designation is applied to structures that do not have adequate lane widths, shoulder widths or vertical clearances to serve current traffic demand.
