Lee victorious on first day
One of the most symbolic monuments on Oak Ridge is of the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry, which features a statuette of a dog, "Sallie." Sallie was adopted by the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry and was present during the Battle of Gettysburg, but was lost on the first day. Late on July 5, a burial detail discovered Sallie alive, but lying among the corpses of the regiment. Sallie remained with her regiment, until she was killed at the Battle of Hatcher's Run (Va.), in 1864.
