Culp's Hill Retaking Culp's Hill Culp's Hill is thick with tree cover today, but that was not the case during the Battle of Gettysburg when the woods were not as dense. The open nature of the woods during the battle benefited its defenders, providing them with a clear field of fire and ability to see any enemy approach.
