The Sultanate of Oman occupies a strategic corner of the Arabian Peninsula. It is one of seven countries that share that land mass, situated on its eastern coast. It is surrounded by the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, the Arabian Sea, and beyond that, the Indian Ocean.

More than three decades ago, Linda Pappas Funsch visited Oman for the first time. Little did she realize at the time that she would be witness to a pivotal moment in the country's history. During that 1974 trip she saw a country that was poised to take its place among modern nation-states.

In the spring of 2006, she returned to this unique, fascinating, but little-known country in the Middle East. What she discovered was a changed land.

In this seven-part multimedia series, Ms. Funsch opens the door to Oman through her stories and an array of photos.
