  • We have left Florida and are now in Charleston.

I returned from Germany April 8 after one week there. While my visit was due to a sad occasion I did enjoy myself – I always do when I am in my "Heimatland.

Christopher, my second son, who moved to Germany 10 years ago, came to Wuerzburg, where I stayed with my cousin Erika. We had a nice time together enjoying several typical German meals — very tasty and (unfortunately) also very fattening.

Wednesday was our last day in Florida and we spent it with Robin, Jordyn and Nick. We went to a Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament in Orlando. The performances with the Andalusians, one of the oldest European horse breeds, the fighting of the knights and the jousting were exciting to watch. The dinner was eaten medieval style, without forks, knives or spoons. It was a fun evening. We were sad to leave the kids, but were excited to go on the road again.

Thursday morning we took off for South Carolina. We took I-4 to I-95 and drove north to Woodbine, Ga., just across the Florida state line, where we had reservations at one of the Coast-to-Coast camping resorts. The trip was about 300 miles; about the right amount of miles for one day.

We used to drive as many miles as possible in one day just to have enough time at our vacation spot. Now, that we are on "vacation" all the time we take it easy. We made it a rule to always pull into a campground while it is still light and we have plenty of time to set up and time to relax.

On the road we were among many RVs, all going north. The rest areas and Flying J parking lots were full with ‘snowbirds’ on their way back home. Most of them were from Canada, Michigan and Minnesota. They plan on taking most of April to travel to be home when spring has arrived.

The next morning we drove approximately 200 miles to Hollywood, S.C., a small town just outside Charleston. The drive was very nice with sunshine all the way, which is always great when traveling on the road.

Ray and Clara Dinterman were already there and before setting up we had lunch, fixed by Clara, and caught up on the latest news. Ray and Clara have been our camping buddies for close to 20 years and we have taken many wonderful camping trips together.

The campground here is called Lake Aire and is situated in a wooded area with several small lakes on the property. Quite different from Florida, very rustic. Our front view is to a pond with ducks and geese swimming around.

Ray and Clara know this area quite well and have many suggestions for sightseeing. I know we’ll be busy this week going places and enjoying being with our friends.
