  • For the last three weeks we have been in the Frederick area and so far have had a great time — a regular homecoming.

We stayed for two weeks in our Coast-to-Coast home park, the Gettysburg Battlefield Resort. Two weeks is as long as we can stay there at one time. The ‘week-out’ we spent in a small park near Westminster. There we met up with friends Erma and Bill, who were our neighbors in Florida and who we will also be in Florida again for the winter. While I am writing this we are back at Gettysburg and will be here until mid-November.

Gettysburg is a wonderful and interesting place for sightseeing — it is full of Civil War history. During the summer there are Civil War reenactments and all types of activities played by people all dressed in period costumes. Driving through the battlefields and reading about the various battles fought there, as well as visiting the Civil War museum is quite the experience. One can learn so much about this terrible war that divided our nation and especially this decisive battle.

Gettysburg has many nice souvenir shops and also great restaurants. One, the Dobbin House used to be a hiding place for slaves who were fleeing to the North.

We love Gettysburg, but this time we have spent no time sightseeing, we spent most of our time driving to Frederick to get together with friends. And, of course, whenever friends meet what do American do? They eat! So we have done lunches, have been invited to dinner or had friends over at our place for dinner.

We will be here another 2 1/2 weeks and by that time I think we will be literally "rolling" out of here. But it is fun.

It was fun when we unexpectedly showed up for mass at our church — St. Timothy in Walkersville. Everybody was so surprised and seemed very happy to see us.

Our good friends and long-time camping buddies, Ray and Clara, came up to the resort for a few days and we had a great time having dinner together (of course), playing cards and sitting around the camp fire in the evening. Just like old times.

Ralph was able to join his golfing group again — buddies from work who still golf every Thursday afternoon. He even got up a few times on Saturday morning at o’clock for a 7:30 tee-off time with his friends. He also spent some time at his former workplace and caught up on all the news "at the shop." He sure loved meeting with the guys.

I joined my Red Hat Group one afternoon for their monthly lunch. That was fun. I have been going to the line dancing classes every week at the Senior Center in Frederick, one of the activities I always enjoyed very much. I was even fortunate to be able to play Bridge with my group for two Mondays – they needed someone to fill in. I guess taking Gingko every day works — I hadn’t forgotten too much.

The Frederick Sister City Association (FSCA) is another activity I was heavily involved in and I was able to attend a board meeting, had lunch, and met several "of the girls" for dinner one evening. A group of us also met at the Schifferstadt Oktoberfest.

I had lunch with former co-workers from SAIC Frederick on Fort Detrick where I worked for many years. It seems some of my co-workers read the blog every week, and enjoy keeping up with our travels. That made me feel good, knowing that what I am writing is actually read and enjoyed.

Besides meeting and eating with friends, we also visited our doctors for annual checkups and lab tests. All is well with our health except for the weight — no surprise there.

Gretchen also got a clean bill of health from her doctor.

We do love Frederick and we do miss our friends and so many of the activities. But we do love our lifestyle — I’ll write a bit more about that in my next blog.

We are looking forward for the remainder of our time here and getting together with friends we haven’t yet been able to see.
