Middletown -- Kevin Lynott's commute to his coaching job just got a lot shorter.

Lynott, who lives in Myersville and coached Brunswick for the last five years, has been named the new varsity football coach at Middletown , Middletown athletic director Tim Ambrose said on Monday.

Lynott replaces Lorne Ridenour, who resigned after three years at the varsity football helm at Middletown . Lynott is the third varsity football coach in Middletown history.

"We made Kevin the offer and he's accepted it," Ambrose said. "We wanted to get (the hiring) done so we can move on."

Lynott said the offer was made official on Thursday, he accepted it that day and last Friday at 2 p.m., he called a team meeting to annouce his resignation and departure from Brunswick . He also said that meeting was a tough one to hold.

"It was difficult," Lynott said. "But it was a sudden chain of events which started with Lorne's resignation."

Lynott said a major factor in his decision to leave Brunswick and take the Middletown job was family. The father of four said his children are in the Middletown High School feeder system. His oldest child, a daughter, enters Middletown High School this fall.

"That weighed heavily on my decision," Lynott confirmed. He also said this move means he will be coaching in the community where he lives and he hopes to also get a teaching position in the Middletown school system.

But Lynott, who is a physical education teacher at Brunswick , said actual teaching assignments for the next school year won't be known until sometime in the spring. He said the ideal situation for him would be to teach at Middletown .

If Lynott gets a teaching job at Middletown , his 40-minute, one-way commute will be reduced to about 10 minutes.

Lynott is no stranger to Middletown 's football program. He served as an assistant on Ambrose's staff from 2000 to 2002 before taking the Brunswick job in 2003. In five years as the Railroaders' head coach, he compiled a 26-27 record.

That record includes a Class 1A North championship in 2005 and a berth in the state Class 1A semifinals. In an ironic twist, Lynott's Railroaders upset Middletown in his first year of varsity coaching.

"That was my first win as a varsity football coach," Lynott said. "We won that game in double-overtime on about a 20-yard field goal."

Lynott also was an assistant at Brunswick from 1994 to 1999. He has spent 14 years as a coach, both at Brunswick and at Middletown . His experience as a coach includes five playoff games, two regional championships and one state final.

"I have many fond memories at Brunswick and the community support has been tremendous," Lynott said. "But with my family situation, this is a great opportunity. It was my time to go."

One thing Lynott said he's looking forward to at his new job is watching the renovations take place at the football stadium. He said there are plans for a turf field, expanded stadium seating, a new scoreboard and a new concession stand.
