BRUNSWICK -- Urbana's girls basketball team unleashed a balanced running game against a struggling Brunswick squad on Monday in the opening round of the Glade Valley AllSports Holiday Tournament.Thirteen Hawks scored as they routed the Railroaders, 82-16, setting up a meeting between two of the county's top teams in today's championship game at 7 p.m. against Walkersville. The Lions defeated Tuscarora, 60-38, in the other first-round game.
Brunswick and Tuscarora will play in the consolation game at 5:30 p.m.
Urbana (7-0) prides itself maintaining an up-tempo style no matter who is on the floor.
"All of our players can play (at the same level of intensity)," Urbana coach Chris said. "That's our biggest strength. We've started six different lineups. Every kid on our team has started. We don't really miss, whether we have a first team, a second team, or a third team on the floor."
As an example, Krivos said the Hawks have been without the services of last year's top scorer, Kaitlin Taylor, for the last two games because she had wisdom teeth removed.
Alex Cummings and Kristen Juenger each had 12 points to lead Urbana. Ashleigh Fossett had 10 points for the Hawks. Cummings had five steals and Erica Cox had three.
Brunswick, which was held to eight points in the first half and shut out in the fourth quarter, was led by Bethany McCallum, who had six points, 13 rebounds and six steals. Shelby Carter added 10 rebounds.
In Monday's first game, Walkersville used an 8-0 run to start the second half to pull away from the Titans. The Lions opened the game with a 13-0 run, but Tuscarora responded with a 9-0 spurt to start the second quarter. It pulled to within 23-19 at halftime.
"Fortunately, we were able to get back into our game plan and execute when we needed to in the third quarter," Walkersville coach Mike Mathis said.
Josie Hildebrand led Walkersville with 15 points while Shernise Disney had 12 and Krysten Grossnickle had 10. Grossnickle also had 11 rebounds.
"We're just trying to get the girls to play a whole game," Tuscarora coach Brooke Crawford said. "In the second quarter, I thought we played tremendous defense. We just need to do that the entire game."
Jalita Boffman had nine points for Tuscarora (2-4) and Brittany Bryant had 14 rebounds. The Titans' Jasmine Naylor had 13 rebounds and Jessica Talley had 10.
