Middletown --With an inexperienced team carrying just five seniors and possible distractions of Saturday night's prom, the Middletown Knights boys lacrosse team met their match with Damascus.--The Hornets made a tremendous push in the game's final quarter to rally from a three-goal deficit with five unanswered goals by its core group of senior leaders as they stunned the Knights by a score of 9-7 in the 3A/2A West quarterfinals.
--It was the resiliency and fight by Damascus that kept them in the game as an unnamed Hornets player yelled, "That's how you do it."
--So how did the Hornets rally in the final quarter? They won the battle in the trenches, gathering groundball after groundball, and tightened up their defense by forcing Knight turnovers.
--"We had too many turnovers, that's about all," Knights assistant coach Roger Jackson said. "They had the heart when it counted but we wish them well."
--Even the lacrosse goal itself staved off a number of shots by the Knights on the afternoon as the pipes prevented at least five scoring chances, including a pair of chances with under two minutes to play in the game.
--The Knights (9-5) jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead after the first quarter on a pair of goals by Adam Dulberger and a goal by Evan Clough.
--Damascus cut the lead to 3-2 with 5:11 to go before halftime as long pole midfielder Mike Barberi weaved his way through traffic from midfield, splitting a pair of Knights defenders before finding the back of the net.
--In the third quarter, the Knights pushed the lead to 4-2 on a Tim Tolino goal before the Hornets tied the game with 6:23 remaining on goals from Cody Lister and Elliot Semuski.
--The Knights closed out the third quarter with two goals to take a 6-4 lead going into the final 12 minutes of regulation. Sam Michels ran up the middle of the field fired a shot on net that trickled off the stick of Hornets goalie Eric McCoy and into the net, and Patrick Ryan scooped up a groundball and beat McCoy with a waist-high blast.
--Middletown 's final goal came with 10:47 to play in the game as Ryan intercepted an outlet pass, starting a 4-on-1 breakaway as he passed upfield to Johnny Gallaway, who connected on a one-timer with Tolino for the goal.
--From there, the Hornets controlled the tempo as Lister, Jake Moser, Billy Thane and Dylan Zablocki tallied goals in the final 8:44 to advance.
--Dulberger and Tolino led the Knights with two goals apiece as Clough added a goal and an assist. Knights goalie Simon Kinderknecht made 12 saves in net.
--The Knights will use this season's experience as they look forward to next season, when they will return a number of starters and role players.
